Closing Ceremony of the Summer Reading Program 2024

The Grand Finale

The air of the day was busy and jittery as the staff buzzed about sorting the stage for our little adventurers. The time to start rolled around and the refreshments brought by families were still flooding into the kids’ section. All the mothers, sisters and aunties chipped in their efforts and plated all the refreshments expertly wasting no time. The opening remarks kicked off with our Head Librarian Trueleen J. Albert enthusiastically welcoming our esteemed guests from the United States of America, Madam Ambassador Jennifer L. Johnson and the Marine Corp, as well as representatives from Australian Embassy, Pohnpei State Government, National Government, Board Members of the FPPL Mrs. Suzanne L. Gallen (Chairwoman) & Mr. Vantslot Etse from NACH (Board Member) and our traditional leaders. The ceremony had garnered quite a momentum and brought about a large number of supportive attendees that we had the pleasure of hosting. Kalahngan en kupwuromwail maingko!

The prayer was led by our kind guest and parent of our little patrons. We then slid over to the opening song that has plagued parents for the last four weeks, The Adventure Song sung by our little students! The showcases of the day lead with our little super stars from Cluster 1 (Morning Session Team Yellow) with songs and actions displaying land, sea and air adventures from the Bible. Our teachers Mrs. Trueleen J. Albert (Head Librarian) along with Elder and Sister Christensen huddled and encouraged the little golden nuggets as they sang bravely into the crowd of flashing cell-phones and beaming smiles. This number was then followed by another group of cuteness-overloads (Cluster 1 Afternoon Session Team Blue) that were led by their teacher and our superwoman Mrs. Margarita Tecson--a passionate teacher at PICS who has graciously volunteered with the library on many occasions. Little butterfly wings and adorable animal head pieces lined toward the front where a commotion of praise sang through the air; our strong little adventurers performed their number by reciting sweet poems about nature and why they love the library with Moms and Dads fluttering closer to snatch a photo. Cluster 2 (Team Red taught and lead by Mrs. Emyleen A. Charley) dazzled their way in with their red dresses and button ups and read aloud the many, many services and advantages of the library. Our posh-baby-penguins were wowing the audience with the well-rehearsed speeches they'd memorized for the day. Ending the showcases, Cluster 3 (Team Black taught and lead by Ms. Erika Billen) took the party inside to present their personalized PowerPoints. As the crew filed into the Kids Section, the snacks were also being indulged as the brave boys and girls presented all the things they enjoyed throughout the summer at the library. There was so much creativity displayed by the little tech wizards and ladies throughout the week creating their PowerPoints, and the best take away was the starkness of their opinions on joining the summer reading program; from being "forced to join" to "this was the best part of my summer vacation". One might call that an overall super success! The closing remarks were delivered by our FFPL Board Chairwoman, Mrs. Suzanne L. Gallen who summed up everything magnificently, thanking our staff and supporters that have all been part of the process that lead up to that special day.

SPECIAL THANKS TO...

Just to reiterate and paraphrase what was shared by FPPL Chairwoman Mrs. Suzanne L. Gallen, the Board of the Pohnpei Public Library would like to thank all the families that have contributed to this event and worked hard to help us on that day. We are running out of special ways to give even bigger thanks to you all. We hope that you enjoyed your day with us and would return or recommend us for next year!

We are thankful to have also been supported by the students from Seventh Day Adventist (Isabella Yoma, Mara Halstead, Mellyan Nelson, Yosphina Fupul, Maxon Tom, and Evamarie Porter, Aziza Christian, Faith Jewel Wynn) and Christian Calvary Academy (Elain Nakasone). We also had the voluntary assistance and participation of a student all the way from New Hamshire USA who attends Cardigan Mountain School (Zachary Petrini)!

There have also been several members of the community that have swung by and volunteered their time and efforts throughout the summer Mrs. Margarita Tecson, a strong figure of determination and will-power of a woman who taught us how to teach and stay motivated, Ms. Bulou and Ms. Bau from the Fijian Community (Bula vinaka), Mr. Anthony Tecson and Mrs. Rhoan Cubanga from the Filipino Community (Salamat po).

Elder and Sister Christensen from the Mormon Church of Jesus Christ have read to the Story Hour kids for weeks prior to the event and became part of the SRP Commitee. They have contributed with chairs, books and many activities with the kids. We appreciate you all!

We would like to express our undying gratitude to the US Marine Corp, represented and lead by First Lieutenant Elissa Boyle. We are over and beyond the moon with appreciation for the amazing upgrades to the PPL; repaired swings, freshly painted roof, the installation of our window screens, reading books and safety training with the staff of the FPPL. Thank you so much!

We would also like to mention our sponsors as well; we are absolutely fortunate to receive the funds that have been brought to us by the FSM Office of National Archives, Culture & Historic Preservation (NACH) from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grants. We are able to do what we do because of this massive assistance, and we thank you from the pit of our souls. On top of that, thank you to all our vendors that have cooperated and allowed us to collect the gift items that the kids got to take home. Kalahngan lap!

What a wild ride it has been little ladies and gentlemen. We have had such a blast with the little adventurers and we would like express our deepest and most ardent gratitude to our little friends that have joined us in the past 4 weeks. We have grown slightly unaccustomed to the lulling hums of the library and we must say, we miss you all! We hope to see you again next summer! Stay and have a gander at these snapshots of memories from our closing ceremony...
