Bringing Stories to Life: Pohnpei Public Library’s Outreach to Local Schools

Delivering Knowledge, One Stop at a Time

The Pohnpei Public Library recently embarked on a heartwarming mission to foster a love for reading and learning among students across the island. Thanks to the undying generosity of Hawaii State Senator Glenn Wakai, who donated a wide array of books, and the support of the FSM National Archives, Culture and Historical Preservation through the Institute of Museum and Library Services, this initiative was brought to life with the use of a dedicated bookmobile.

Nahnpei Memorial School and High School (December 16, 2024)

The journey began on December 16, 2024, at Nahnpei Memorial School and High School. Students and faculty were thrilled to explore the treasure trove of books delivered by the library’s bookmobile. The donated books ranged from engaging children’s stories to insightful educational materials, ensuring that students of all ages and interests found something to inspire them.

Teachers expressed their gratitude for the expanded resources, emphasizing how these books will enhance the school’s educational programs. “Having access to such diverse materials will encourage our students to read more and dream bigger,” one teacher noted.

Madolenihmw High School (December 11, 2024)

A few days earlier, on December 11, 2024, the bookmobile made its way to Madolenihmw High School. This stop marked a significant milestone in the library’s outreach program. The students eagerly browsed the collection, and many shared their excitement about discovering new genres and authors.

School administrators highlighted the importance of this initiative in bridging educational gaps. They noted how the donation would support literacy efforts and inspire a culture of curiosity and exploration within the school community.

PICS High School (January 10, 2024)

On January 10, 2024, the bookmobile’s final stop brought it to PICS High School, where students were equally enthusiastic about the influx of new reading materials. The event also served as an opportunity for the Pohnpei Public Library staff to connect with students and promote library membership.

One student remarked, “It’s amazing to see so many books in one place, especially ones we’ve never had access to before. I can’t wait to dive into them!”

The Bookmobile: A Symbol of Community and Progress

The bookmobile, donated by the FSM National Archives, Culture and Historical Preservation through the Institute of Museum and Library Services, played a pivotal role in making this outreach possible. Equipped to transport books across the island, the vehicle symbolizes a commitment to education, culture, and the preservation of knowledge.

Looking Ahead

The Board of the Pohnpei Public Library wishes to start the year strong and this was exactly where we all hope to start. There is so much potential to build a connection with the community through ensuring that our places of learning are equipped for the coming year. Therefore, the Board extends its warm greetings to all and appreciates everyone that has had an impactful part in our mission and vision which we continue to uphold and aspire towards.

The Pohnpei Public Library’s collaboration with Senator Glenn Wakai and the FSM National Archives reflects the power of partnerships in fostering education and community development. By bringing books directly to schools, the library is breaking down barriers and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to explore the world through reading.

As the program continues, the library hopes to inspire a new generation of readers and learners, leaving a lasting impact on Pohnpei’s educational landscape. For more information on how you can support similar initiatives, visit the Pohnpei Public Library or reach out to local education advocates.

Together, we can turn the pages of possibility and write a brighter future for our youth.
