Arigato and Saionara!

Math Fun at Pohnpei Public Library

July 28–31, 2025

From July 28th to 31st, the Pohnpei Public Library was buzzing with energy and laughter as children from 1st to 4th grade gathered for a special Math Fun Program led by JICA Volunteer Miss Miki Kobayashi, with the wonderful assistance of Miss Nana Maruo and Miss Ayaka, all visiting from Japan.

This summer learning adventure introduced children to fun, hands-on ways of exploring numbers, sequences, shapes, and multiplication. The activities went far beyond the classroom style of math. Students played Number Bingo, raced to solve quick challenges, and used colorful shaped blocks to build imaginative models—ranging from towers and animals to abstract creations straight from their own imaginations.

Each half-day session was filled with interactive games, creative challenges, and moments of shared laughter. The schedule included short snack breaks and time to rest, keeping everyone refreshed and ready for the next round of fun.

One of the most heartwarming parts of the program was the mix of students. Children from Fiji, the Cook Islands, Tonga, and Japan joined their local Pohnpeian peers, creating a joyful atmosphere of cultural exchange and friendship. Seeing the children learn together, share ideas, and cheer each other on was truly a highlight.

The Pohnpei Public Library extends a big thank you to Miki, Nana, and Ayaka for sharing your time, skills, and passion for teaching. Your creativity and dedication made this program both educational and unforgettable. We hope to welcome you and your organization back in the future!
