If you’ve passed by the Pohnpei Public Library lately, you may have noticed a few things looking shinier, safer, and more colorful than before. That’s no accident—it’s thanks to our friends in uniform, the U.S. Marines and Navy, who came armed not with books (this time), but with paintbrushes, tools, and a can-do spirit that would make even our storybook superheroes jealous.

Painting the Parkinglot

First, let’s talk about the bookmobile. Our trusty four-wheeled library now has a brand-new entryway that makes it easier for everyone to hop aboard and dive into adventures on the road. They also put up barbed wire along our back fence—because while we love open books, open fences are a whole different story!

Then came the parking lot, the benches, and our beloved turtle mascot. Thanks to their careful painting skills, the lot looks sharp, the benches are welcoming again, and our turtle mascot is sporting a fresh coat of paint that makes it look ready to win a race (sorry, hare).

And as if beautifying the library wasn’t enough, they even brought us together for a magical evening under the stars with a showing of Zootopia. For the kids, it was a brand-new adventure on the big screen; for the parents, a delightful trip down memory lane. This was also made possible through coordination with the US Embassy. Honestly, the only thing missing was free popcorn refills on demand.

We can’t say thank you enough to the U.S. Marines and Navy. Their hard work, laughter, and willingness to lend a hand mean the world to us. It’s more than paint, fences, or movie nights—it’s about building community, side by side.

We’re so grateful for this partnership, and we look forward to many more projects, laughs, and maybe even a few more movie nights (hint, hint).

From all of us at the Pohnpei Public Library—kalahngan en kupwuromwail and thank you!
