Representing the Friends of the Pohnpei Public Library, our Head Librarian Mrs. Trueleen J. Albert and Library Aide Jordan Ligorio had the honor of attending this year’s event. Both returned home energized, enriched, and deeply appreciative of the hospitality and spirit of collaboration that defined the entire conference.
An Enriching Experience Rooted in Culture and Connection
The conference theme, “Promoting Access and Indigeneity in Pacific Island Archives, Libraries, and Museums,” resonated strongly with our team. Throughout the four days, they participated in meaningful conversations and workshops that explored how Pacific libraries and cultural institutions can better uplift indigenous voices, preserve local knowledge, and ensure access for all.
From keynote sessions to informal hallway conversations, every moment offered an opportunity to learn from colleagues across Micronesia and the wider Pacific. Our staff especially appreciated hearing about innovative community programs and culturally grounded approaches that they hope to bring back and adapt for Pohnpei.
Warm Marshallese Hospitality
Our Head Librarian and Library Aide could not stop talking about the incredible warmth and kindness shown by the Marshallese hosts. The conference—co-sponsored by the Marshall Islands Library Association (MILA), RMI National Alele Museum, Library and Archive, Nitijela, Ministry of Culture and Internal Affairs, College of the Marshall Islands, and University of the South Pacific—was beautifully organized and truly embodied the spirit of regional cooperation.
They were welcomed not just as attendees, but as family. From the scenic surroundings of Majuro to the cultural performances and shared meals, the experience was one they will cherish for years to come.
Deep Gratitude and Renewed Purpose
On behalf of the Friends of the Pohnpei Public Library, we extend our sincere thank you to the organizers, sponsors, speakers, volunteers, and fellow attendees of PIALA 2025. Your dedication to strengthening Pacific libraries, archives, and museums inspires us.
Our staff returned home with renewed purpose, fresh ideas, and a strengthened sense of belonging within the Pacific library community. We are excited to continue building on the connections made and to contribute to the shared mission of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of our islands.
Until We Meet Again
Kalahngan, Kommool tata, and thank you once again to our Marshallese friends and the entire PIALA community. We look forward to seeing you at next year’s conference—and to continuing this important journey together.
